Mental illness is up to seven times more common in correctional institutions than in the community, and research indicates that at least seven of 10 offenders in the federal correctional system have engaged in problematic use of alcohol and other drugs during the one-year period prior to their incarceration.

As part of the Human Services and Justice Coordinating Committee, we work to improve outcomes for individuals with complex human services needs who interact with the criminal justice system. CMHA and the Human Services Justice Coordinating Comittee has long worked to address the overrepresentation of individuals living with mental health and substance use issues in correctional institutions across the province.
